Mailbox Issue – We Need Your Help

The drive-up mailbox at the St. Charles Post Office has been out of service for months. This service is especially important for Vote-by-Mail voters and for residents who rely on accessible, drive-up options. We have been told a replacement has been ordered, but the delay has been extensive and no clear timeline has been provided.

Early voting has already begun, and the broken mailbox is creating real barriers. Vote-by-Mail voters must now leave their vehicles to mail ballots, and people with disabilities or mobility challenges have lost an essential way to send their mail.

We have contacted the St. Charles Post Office and were told there is nothing they can do locally. This has now become a federal issue.

The mailbox is located on the line of Congressmen Bill Foster and Raja Krishnamoorthi's districts. We are asking community members to call their offices and ask why the replacement mailbox is taking so long — and to request immediate action.

Here are their phone numbers:

Dear Congressman Krishnamoorthi --

The drive-up mailbox at the St. Charles post office at 2600 Oak St. has been out of service for months. It’s rusty and falling apart, and a sign has been posted on it instructing patrons to walk inside to drop off their mail.

While walking inside is an option for a short period of time, doing so is not a viable long-term alternative for people with disabilities, people with young children in the car, or people anticipating a quick visit to the post office. Our tax dollars support a functioning local post office, and right now, a significant part of our post office is not functioning as it should (and hasn’t been for months).

Mail-in voting has begun for Illinois primaries, and an out-of-order mailbox at one of the biggest post offices in the area is a significant impediment to submitting mail-in ballots. Elections play a major role in maintaining a strong democracy, and we expect our government systems to work together in holding fully fair and free elections.

I ask that you immediately prioritize replacing this mailbox in St. Charles so as to maintain full service in this community and remove this barrier to mail-in voting.

Sincerely,
